Ambassador Hotel
Jacksonville, FL
The Ambassador Hotel, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983, has received conditional approval for a Part 2 renovation. Located in Downtown Jacksonville's National Register Historic District, near City Hall and courthouse complexes, the vacant six-story building, originally named 310 West Church Street Apartments, features Beaux-arts eclectic architecture. Constructed of reinforced concrete with a cast stone and English bond brick exterior, it occupies the northeast corner of downtown block 50, bordered by Duval, North Pearl, West Church, and Julia Streets. The rest of the block will be developed for apartments and a parking garage.
Independent Life Building
Jacksonville, FL
The historic 19-story Independent Life Building in Downtown North Core will be converted into a mixed-use space. The project includes 135 units, a ground-floor grocery store, a restaurant, and an executive sky lounge. The building, formerly used by Independent Life and later JEA, has been vacant since the mid-1990s. Designated a local landmark in April 2020, the project received support from a Historic Preservation Trust Fund grant, aiding plans for the apartment development. Exterior renovations include glass replacement, restoring the original "Independent" sign, and reilluminating the spire. The project will also enhance streetscape and pedestrian walkways.
